California Special California Special
We built the car in 1959-60 and it was raced in 1960-61. It is a one-off, California "Special,” typical of many of the home-built cars that were popular in the days before "kit-cars.” Long story short, I know you're busy. I found the car wrecked and stripped as a derelict from a cryptic ad in Hemmings in 1985. The seller was a guy who bought it for the Borrani wheels, and didn't know what it was. When I told him, the price doubled, when he learned, through me, that the car had a race history, it doubled again and I was unable to afford it. I tracked the car through two more owners and bought the remains, still untouched and in awful shape, in 2012. I retired in '14 and now am restoring the car because nobody else would ever pay what I did, or tackle the restoration. So, now, 59 years later, I have another 354 (built with your WONDERFUL parts) and am putting it back together. That's the short version. It's an interesting story that would take an hour to tell, but I was thrilled that you were interested and I'm thrilled to be using HHH for the restoration. Enclosed are a few pictures from back in the day (our driveway in 1959) and a few of the car and shots of my progress so far. Long project, but the car is worthy, I think. First picture is my brother, Bill, 19 years old and me with the flag, age 11.
